Holiday get-togethers can mean lots of travel — often on the road. Increased time spent behind the wheel can mean a higher risk for accidents, especially when severe weather is involved. The good news is that drivers can protect themselves and their passengers by following these holiday travel rules:
- Before you hit the road, make sure you’re up-to-date on maintenance. And be sure to check those tires for pressure.
- Don’t forget your seat belts. Young children might require booster seats until they hit the weight minimum.
- Remember, the rear seat is the safest place for children of any age to ride.
- Allow plenty of time to get to your destination, and be flexible if things don’t go as planned.
- Check the forecast. If heavy snow or ice are predicted during the time you plan to travel, consider changing your plans.
- Get a good night’s sleep before driving. Take plenty of breaks and do not push yourself to meet an unrealistic schedule. If you get tired, pull over and allow yourself to rest until you feel refreshed. If you don’t feel fit to drive, consider spending the night in a hotel, or ask your passenger to take over.
- Keep your speed down, especially in hazardous conditions. Give yourself plenty of time and distance to drive defensively.
- Do not pass if you cannot see enough clear road to do so safely.
- If you plan to consume alcohol, secure a designated driver. You can never be too safe.
- Assemble a car safety kit containing items like blankets, gloves, an ice scraper, flashlight, jumper cables and snacks.
- Ensure your cell phone is charged so you can notify someone in case of an emergency or accident. Having a car charger on hand is a good idea.
- Make sure you have enough gas in your tank. You never know if you’ll need to take a detour.
