Fitness trends for 2013

Want to be a fitness trend-setter?

You’ve come to the right spot.

Follow the list of top predicted fitness trends put together by American College of Sports Medicine, and you’ll be ahead of the curve for 2013.

That’s especially the case if you like to do push-ups, planks, pull-ups and squats. Those old standby exercises found their way into the top 10 for the first time as ACSM’s worldwide survey revealed that body weight training is on the rise.

“Body weight exercises are a proven way to get and stay fit,” the study’s author, Walt Thompson Ph.D., FACSM, of Georgia State University, told ACSM. “In a time when many people are concerned with cutting expenses, body weight exercises are a great way to feel great and look toned without a big financial investment.”

Here’s what else is trending in the fitness world:

1. Educated, Certified and Experienced Fitness Professionals. Certification programs and fully accredited education tops the list.

2. Strength training. Being strong is the new skinny.

3. Body weight training. Minimal equipment, maximum results, no excuses.

4. Children and obesity. This epidemic isn’t going to go away until we help kids do something about it.

5. Exercise and weight loss. Balancing energy expenditure with energy consumption (calories in, calories out) is again popular.

Other hot topics include: Fitness programs for older adults, personal training, functional fitness, core training and group personal training.
