Carpe diem. Seize the day. When it comes to health and nutrition, that couldn’t be more true. Too often we postpone our resolve to eat better or exercise until later. We tell ourselves things like, “After the holidays, I’ll get back to eating well.” Or, “When this stressful part of life ends, I’ll get back on the bandwagon.” The truth, however, lies in the fact that eating healthily and exercising help us weather those busy, stressful times much better than any sugary treat could do.
Here’s an idea. What if we were to make our New Year’s resolutions now? And, adhere to them during the holidays? Since losing weight is the number one resolution made each year, why not get a head start and keep yourself from falling so far from the path. Certainly, the holidays are a time when food is an enjoyable aspect of gathering and enjoying time with loved ones. Depriving yourself of things you enjoy during this time of year would be unwise and, frankly, not very fun. But, just try to keep things in check.
Here are a few suggestions.
- Stay active. Sure, the holidays are a lot about good food, but you can also make it about some great time outdoors. Head out for a brisk walk before or after the big meal, toss a football back and forth or go for a bike ride.
- Cut down on tasting. If you are the cook, certainly you want to ensure the food tastes delicious before serving it. One or two bites should do it…not 9 or 10. Many of us find we aren’t hungry after preparing a meal because we have enjoyed a few too many tastes.
- Focus your energy elsewhere. Remember the food at a party is only part of the draw. Games, socializing and reflecting on a great year can help us keep our focus on things other than food.
- Be picky. When it comes to desserts, be selective. If you aren’t enjoying a treat don’t be afraid to dump it. It’s not worth the calories!
- Empty tummy = no no. Try to avoid letting too much time to pass between eating so that you aren’t ravenously hungry. Especially when headed to a party. You’ll find your self control is much better if you are moderately hungry, not starving.
Resolve to seize THIS day – no need to wait until January to feel better.
