Five Fall Decorating Mistakes to Avoid

Old chair stands in front of a flaked off wallThis fall, suppose you’ve already gotten a fabulous Five Star Painting paint job (or you’re in the process of scheduling it – we’re at the ready!). What factors should you consider as you determine the decorations you’ll use to help that beautiful paint stand out through the holidays?

It turns out there are numerous gaffes to be made, and we’d all be wise to heed the advice of those who have walked down this road before. To that end, we’ve pulled together some infamous interior decorating mistakes to avoid – along with a few ideas about alternatives that are good. We wouldn’t want to leave you hanging! The following tips come from ColorCalling.com, About.com Home and the Salt and Pepper Moms blog.

Too Many Somethings. Whether you’ve got a plethora of photos showing your family playing in the fall leaves or 1,001 pumpkin trinkets, recognize they don’t all need to be on display at once. Select your favorites and arrange them tastefully to avoid overwhelming your holiday guests.

Furniture Framing. Rather than barricading your living room inside of walls made of couches and chairs, try placing furniture together in groups. This can encourage conversation (and limit claustrophobia).

Area Rug Islands. Don’t strand those lovely area rugs! Place furniture on top of them or around the edges rather than leaving them barren.

Clash Color Palettes. Once you’ve had walls painted in a calming color, don’t haul in fiery red furniture expecting guests to magically be at ease. Instead, carefully select objects in the room to yield the desired effect consistently.

Dinky Drapes. Paying a little attention to windows can go a long way—particularly since your drapes should extend nearly to the floor. Give your windows depth by hanging curtain rods high and picking a full-bodied drape fabric with appealing pleats.

Whatever your decorating plans this fall, remember to take heed to details rather than carelessly throwing objects in a room. Doing so will ensure guests enjoy your home as much as you do.
