This time of year apples become the symbol of fall. At the height of their ripeness apples are crisp, juicy and delicious. And, the old Welsh adage, “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away” isn’t actually far from the truth. Apples are full of healthy nutrients. Antioxidants, flavanoids (antioxidant nutrients in certain foods) and fiber are just a few. The nutrients in apples have been linked to combating cancer, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. Apples are loaded with vitamin C, B complex vitamins, calcium, potassium and phosphorus – it’s easy to understand why these convenient hand-friendly fruits are nutritional powerhouses.
If you happen to have an apple tree, have acquired apples from a friend’s tree, or at a local farmer’s market (check out you-pick farms for a fun outing for the kids!), you may be looking for ways to use them. Here are some of our favorites.
Apple Cinnamon Fruit Leather
Simple to make and a snack akin to candy, you can use apples to make a fruit leather that’s a quick snack and super yummy.
Slow Cooker Applesauce
Made in a slower cooker, applesauce is a cinch to make. Any variety of apple is fine, though the recipe specifies Honeycrisp. You can experiment to see what variety is your favorite. You can process applesauce in a canner or freeze it. Use applesauce to make apple pancakes, muffins or top on cooked pork chops. So many options!
Apple Cake
For a unique variation on classic apple pie, try this apple cake with German origins. It looks beautiful and would be a lovely addition to any fall gathering.
