Becoming a new mom can be one of the most exhilarating experiences in your life. Like most women, you probably have about a million questions now that you have that positive pregnancy test in hand. The first racing thought is probably scheduling a prenatal appointment. Your OBGYN is going to be an intricate part of your life for the next nine months. But what exactly happens at your appointments? Here is a run through of what to expect when you’re expecting!
Like most doctors’ visits, your appointments will begin with the run-down of your weight and vitals. Your weight during pregnancy is especially important as an excess or lack of gain could signal concern. So hop on that scale with pride, ladies, and don’t be scared of the gains! A healthy pregnancy should entail about 15-20 pounds of baby weight depending on your current size and height. You also may be asked questions about your medical history and for information about your partner. Be open and upfront with your OBGYN and don’t be afraid to ask questions! There is no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to your child and body.
Further checks will consist of taking your blood pressure, temperature and collecting a urine specimen. Urine samples measure for glucose and proteins and can be a critical indicator of warning signs in pregnancy such as preeclampsia. Blood work may also be required in order to check your white blood cell count and for anemia. Each of these tests is perfectly normal and is simply used to monitor and promote a healthy pregnancy.
The most exciting part of your prenatal is often seeing your baby. Ultrasounds are conducted at your first visit and then periodically throughout the rest of your pregnancy. It is electrifying to watch your baby grow from a teeny spec on the ultrasound to a thriving, kicking infant. You may even be offered a 4-D imaging ultrasound, which can show pictures of your child in incredible detail and resolution. Finally, the doctor will provide you with tips and information on eating healthy, staying fit, and preparing for your next visit.
Embrace each visit as an opportunity to monitor your own and your baby’s health and stay informed about your pregnancy. These next nine months are a growing and learning experience for every new mom. Ask questions, take care of your body, and enjoy the last nine months of sleeping through the night!
