Apples, apples and more apples

Healthy Organic Apples in the BasketThis time of year apples become the symbol of fall. At the height of their ripeness apples are crisp, juicy and delicious. And, the old Welsh adage, “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away” isn’t actually far from the truth. Apples are full of healthy nutrients. Antioxidants, flavanoids (antioxidant nutrients in certain foods) and fiber are just a few. The nutrients in apples have been linked to combating cancer, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. Apples are loaded with vitamin C, B complex vitamins, calcium, potassium and phosphorus – it’s easy to understand why these convenient hand-friendly fruits are nutritional powerhouses.

If you happen to have an apple tree, have acquired apples from a friend’s tree, or at a local farmer’s market (check out you-pick farms for a fun outing for the kids!), you may be looking for ways to use them. Here are some of our favorites.
