Indoor allergies don’t just “fall back” with the season

Illustration depicting a red and white triangular warning signMost of you are probably thinking that with fall in full swing and winter on its way, allergy season is coming to an end. While cooler weather may decrease the potency of some types of allergens outdoors, pollen, animal dander, mold, cockroaches and dust mites can hang out inside your home, allowing for a year-round allergy season indoors.

Allergies are tricky. An allergic reaction happens when a person’s immune system identifies an allergen (such as pollen, mold, etc.) as a serious threat to the body. Allergies can develop at any time, the body suddenly recognizing something as harmful to the body and unleashing chemicals that can cause swelling, a runny nose, hives and other symptoms.

To avoid allergies during the winter, especially inside your home, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Surgeon General recommend that all homes be tested annually for mold, radon and other allergens. We advise having your air ducts cleaned at least once a year, cleaning out all of the dust, mold and pollen that can get trapped in your vents.
