Holiday spirit can make consumers vulnerable to scammers

portrait of a salesman with clientScammers don’t take the holidays off. In fact, many scam artists shift into high gear during the holidays. Charitable sentiment surrounding the year-end holidays often makes people much more vulnerable to being victimized by scammers.

If someone rings your doorbell claiming to represent a legitimate charity, here are three important steps to take to avoid giving your hard-earned money to a scam artist:

  1. Do not invite the person to come inside. Keep the conversation on the doorstep. Ask for printed information about the opportunity to donate money that you can review on your own.
  2. Be aware of warning signs. If the person declines to provide you with printed information, that’s a warning sign that they aren’t representing a legitimate charitable organization. Another warning sign: Pressure to make a donation immediately or requests for cash.
  3. Do your research. Thinking about making a donation? Don’t make a donation on the spot. Take time to investigate the business.

Many people are loving, considerate human beings. And that’s exactly what causes those very nice people to fall victim to scam artists. Stay alert and be safe this holiday season!
