Halloween tips and treats for the whole family

Three kids in Halloween costumes going trick or treatingCan you believe it’s almost Halloween? Here at Orem Family Medicine, we want our families to stay healthy and safe. That’s why today we’re sharing some easy ideas to help you “treat” your family to a healthier celebration this holiday!

Idea #1: Serve your children eat a healthy meal or snack before they head out for trick-or-treating. That way, it will be less tempting to fill up on sugary candy when they get home.

Idea #2: Always check and inspect the trick-or-treat goodies your children bring home. Make sure everything is unopened. Even better, be sure to take your children trick-or-treating to visit friends, family, and neighbors you know.

Idea #3: Encourage your kids to eat the trick-or-treat candy over several days as a substitute for dessert. That’s a much better way to handle it, than overeating too much in one sitting.

Idea #4: Host a low-fuss Halloween Party complete with healthy treats. It’s easier to encourage good nutrition when you’re serving the snacks. You can even give out non-food treats to reduce temptation altogether. Kids love colored chalk, rubber insects, stickers, whistles, and erasers. Get creative!

Idea #5: Check out these great Healthy Halloween Recipes featured on the Food Network website. You might try making the Squash Soup in Pumpkin Bowls, Sweet-and-Spicy Pepitas Popcorn Balls, Pumpkin Caramels, or Chocolate-Dipped Fruit for a grown-up take on the candy classics.
