When the winter months arrive in Arizona, golfers from all over the nation start flocking to our beautiful state for the perfect temperatures and beautiful scenery. If you’re a desert native and want to avoid the crowds though, heading up north just makes sense. Since the altitude makes a significant jump between Phoenix and places like Flagstaff and Prescott, the temperature gets significantly cooler. Here are some tips for staying warm, while you enjoy a round of golf in the mountains!
The power of layers
Arizona usually doesn’t provide much wiggle room when it comes to layers, but in the winter months it’s a totally different story. Hit the course with leggings, sweatpants and long socks. For a top layer, wear a t-shirt, long sleeved tee and a sweatshirt or hooded sweatshirt on top. For headgear, wear a ski band or knitted cap. If you get warm as the game progresses you can always take a layer or two off, but if you start nothing but a shirt and shorts you’re going to be in for a long day.
Ditch the golf cart
Golf carts are convenient and fun to drive, but if you’re trying to beat low temperatures, there’s no better solution than walking. Not only will you get some good cardio in, but you’ll also stay warm.
Hot food and drink
Having a travel mug filled with coffee, hot cider, or tea is a must. If layering and walking aren’t doing the trick, a warm beverage or snack will get the ball rolling. Don’t pack anything too rich or heavy! The lighter, and more energy efficient the treat, the better off you’ll be.
Know your clubs
Cold air is dense air, and no matter what golf ball you select, it won’t travel as far as it would on a balmy summer day. Because of this you might want to use a 7 or 8 iron vs. a 9. Just something to keep in mind!
There are plenty of other things that you can do to help make a cold weather golfing experience more enjoyable. Whether you bring extra gloves, use hand warmers or utilize a softer ball, the options are endless. Tell us what you like to do via our Facebook page, and enjoy your time on the links!
