How to live the dream

Door opening with bright light illuminating a dark spaceHow often have you been asked this question: “Where do you see yourself in five years?” It seems to be in the top 10 questions for interviewers to ask. However, how often have you really taken time to consider the depth of this question?

‘Living the dream,’ can seem more of a fairy tale than a reality as an adult. However, most of us as children had many dreams and hopes. Maybe it was to grow up to be a super hero, or a fairy princess. But as an adult, most of us get more grounded. This is good in a way, because we need some dose of reality. However, it’s not entirely beneficial because some people do live the dream – and you can, too.

Take time to think about what you really value. Is it time, freedom, helping others, flexibility, recognition, or revenue? It doesn’t hurt to take time out and think about what our priorities are. Consider what areas you feel need to change in order to improve your quality of life. Start to steer yourself in the right direction, towards your dream, because if you’re not satisfied in your job you may be in the wrong place.

Once you’re established what’s important to you, move forward. Set goals! Don’t just dream, but set forth on an adventure. Don’t be afraid to take risks on occasion, be courageous even in the unknown. Find support and seek inspiration, form new habits if you need to. Make a conscience effort to establish your career path.

The ‘dream life’ is what you make it. Each person has a different ‘dream.’ We may not be able to be superheroes or fairy princesses, but we can find a job we are passionate about.
