Get the haircut you want – in terms your stylist will understand

CutAdding layers to your fall wardrobe comes as second nature when the weather turns cooler, but have you thought about what it means to layer your hair? Communication with your stylist is the key to getting the look you want this fall. Here are a few terms you can use to make sure your haircut vision is communicated properly.

If your hair is thick and unmanageable, ask your stylist to thin out your cut. He or she will use thinning shears to cut some of the hairs short while allowing others to remain at their full length.

If you have thinner hair and would like to have the appearance of movement and depth, ask your stylist to layer your look. Longer hair will rest atop shorter hair, giving the appearance of a thicker style. Two additional options for thinning hair? Ask for a choppy or texturized cut. When a stylist gives you a choppy cut with all different lengths, a thicker overall appearance results. Using the term texturized will result in a shorter version of a choppy cut.

Finally, if you are going for a cut with a tapered edge (as opposed to a blunt, straight-cut edge), use the term razored. Your stylist will use a razor (instead of scissors) to trim your hair which will add more texture and volume to your look.
