Will plastic solar cells be part of the solar revolution?

Photovoltaic word cloudSolar cells made from plastics are gaining more traction. Why? Because plastics used in solar cells can be flexible, lightweight and extremely thin. This means plastic solar cells potentially could be printed onto walls, windows and a variety of other surfaces—including curved ones. Talk about amazing!

Consider the fact that these plastic solar cells are generally more affordable than existing solar cells. Think of how this could make renewable energy accessible to people, homes and businesses.

The technology is not mainstream yet, but the future looks bright. In fact many industry experts believe that Silicon Valley’s next big tech innovation will be integrating plastic solar cells into everyday life. Some experts predict that plastic solar cells will have applications in our homes as well as to wearable technology.

According to one article, ”plastic panels ‘will find their own niche thanks to their unique properties: flexible, light, printable, cheap (e.g. photovoltaic tinted windows, portable solar panels for off-grid expeditions, third world country applications)’ and will become a major force on the market.”

What do you think? Will plastic solar cells be part of the solar revolution?
