Although officially known as the Stratofortress, the B-52 earned the affectionate nickname “Big Ugly Fellow” for its ungainly appearance. At peak strength in 1963, the Strategic Air Command operated 650 B-52s in 42 squadrons at 38 different air bases. The one in our museum is nicknamed “Bearin’ Arms” and was built in 1959.
