But with so many tree varieties to choose from, it can be tough to decide on which variety of trees to plant. Here are four trees recommended by This Old House and Better Homes & Gardens magazines for shade and awesome autumn colors:
Freeman maple: This tree’s bright red-orange leaves are a stunning feast for the eyes in the fall. It can grow up to 80 feet tall and is best suited for full-sun, moist environments.
English oak: Notable for its column-like appearance, the tree has a good growth rate and can grow as tall as 60 feet. This type of tree needs well-drained soil.
Northern red oak: This variety grows to be at least 50 feet tall and includes a broad crown that creates the perfect space for picnicking.
Wet cypress: This tree prefers moist soil and can also grow up to 100 feet tall. Its foliage turns red in the fall.
Remember: always do your homework before adding a tree to ensure that it’s not too close to your home or near power lines.
