We know that the youth involved with Scouting are looking forward to participating in outdoor sports and activities this spring! With warmer weather on the way, so many opportunities will open up for Scouts to go camping, hiking, fishing, shooting, and so much more.
Here at the Boy Scout Store, we love all of the great activities that go along with Scouting. In that spirit, today we want to share some information about a traditional Scouting pastime that is gaining in popularity, even for non-Scouts. Have you heard of ‘orienteering’?
The sport has a long history. Orienteering began as a military training exercise developed in Sweden over a century ago, but soon caught on with civilian groups and caught on as a sporting pastime. These days, it’s even a recognized sport at the international Olympic Games.
The idea was – and still is – to navigate through a course using a compass and map. Participants must use their skill and strength to find their way through unknown terrain, and complete the course in the fastest possible time.
The great thing about orienteering is that the sport brings together many different skill sets – creativity, problem solving, physical fitness, teamwork and knowledge of the outdoors – and participants can enjoy the sport at almost any skill level.
This spring, Boy Scouts of America groups across the country will participate in organized orienteering events. The sport is also popular with Girl Scouts, as a family activity, and also for adult athletes.
We always like to encourage people to get involved in Scouting events, activities and sports. Scouting offers so many opportunities for learning and growth! This spring, why not find a local orienteering event and sign up to get involved? And if you need a compass or other info to help get you started, please visit us at the Boy Scout Store!
