The adventures of Niagara Falls daredevils

We get it! We totally get the draw to the most famous falls in North America. Niagara Falls Power of Niagara Falls, Canadian Sideis stunning. The falls are between 167 and 176 feet in height, and 600,000 gallons of water goes over the Horseshoe Falls every second. Amazing! We also get the draw to want to go beyond the spectator railings and decks of the tourist boats and explore the sheer majesty of those falls and the natural elements. But we know better.

There was a time, though, before all the rules and regulations and railings and spectators overtook the area when daredevils, determined to conquer the grandiose falls, attempted to ride them. And they did it in wooden and metal barrels, rubber balls and homemade contraptions. (Now, that’s #mynt!)

The first person to successfully make it over the falls and survive was Annie Taylor in 1901. A decade later, Bobby Leach made the plunge in a metal barrel. He was injured, but survived. Ironically, he died years later from complications of falling after slipping on an orange peel. Over the years, many others have attempted to conquer the falls.
